Just an idea but have you tried your regional train website?
Theres a 'Two Together Railcard' that gives 1/3 off rail fares in your region if it's participating? Gives two named adults cheaper fares for a year.
I have a Network card that's £30 for the year so instead of paying £19.60 for a travel card on the High Speed it's only £13.

Why not go to the ticket office and ask?
I am sure I saw a deal from Brentwood saying one person full the second half price if travelling together when I went in on Sunday.

Why don't you just buy a travel card form Chelmsford? That covers Chelmsford to London and underground, no need for two tickets
